Reading Time: 5 minutes
Basically, a cover letter and a cover letter are similar. Yet they have different purposes.
Cover letter
Let's start with the cover letter. In the cover letter, you explain your resume. Here you tell a little more about your work experience, what you learned, your education and your skills. Keep in mind that a cover letter is not a repetition of your resume, but rather a bit more explanation. A cover letter is your opportunity to share your experience, knowledge and skills and to show how well they match the job requirements. The purpose of a cover letter is to get the employer's attention and convince them to invite you for an interview. Don't make your cover letter too long; one page is enough.
Motivation letter
Okay, now to the cover letter. A cover letter elaborates on your personal motivation and why you are interested in the job. So in your cover letter, you explain why you chose this job and this employer. The purpose of a cover letter is to show that you are excited about the job. Make your cover letter no longer than one A4.
Tips for writing a good cover letter
You've seen a job opening that's right up your alley. Time to write your cover letter. But how do you actually do this? We give you some tips:
- Make sure your cover letter has a good opening sentence. A good opening sentence will make your reader curious to read on.
- Explain what motivates you to want to work for the company and why the position appeals to you. Make the letter personal and avoid standard phrases.
- Avoid sending a cover letter that is full of spelling mistakes. Read your letter carefully yourself and also ask someone else to check your letter.
- End the letter with a good closing sentence in which you reiterate your enthusiasm for the position.
Main differences
In short, a cover letter emphasizes your experience and skills, while a cover letter focuses on your personal motivation and interest in the job. In a cover letter, you often write in a businesslike manner. In a cover letter, it may be a bit more personal.
Not asked for a cover letter, but would like to send one along? You can! In the letter, write why you applied, why you would like to work at that company and why you think you are right for the position. Most importantly, write a letter that makes it clear why you are perfect for the job.
