How can you tell if an employment agency is reliable?
Are you looking for work? Then you can easily and quickly find a job through a temporary employment agency. You can also use an employment agency to see if a particular job or company suits you and possibly move on to a permanent job. In the Netherlands there are many employment agencies. But how do you find an agency that not only does what you need, but is also honest and reliable? What should you pay attention to when working for a temp agency.

The easiest way to see if a temp agency is honest and reliable; is the temp agency affiliated with a trade organization? There are two trade organizations in the Netherlands: the NBBU and the ABU. If a temporary employment agency is a member of one of these two organizations, you can be sure that it is reliable. In fact, ABU and NBBU members must meet high quality requirements. The most important quality requirements of -in this case- the ABU are:
- The employment agency must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce. It seems logical, but unfortunately there are agencies that are not even registered.
- The temporary employment agency is recognized by the SNA. The Stichting Normering Arbeid (SNA) checks whether a temporary employment agency meets all legal obligations. To get the SNA seal of approval, a company must show that it keeps its records properly. Among other things, this means that they properly record the right documents, such as IDs and employment contracts.
- The collective bargaining agreement for temporary workers is correctly applied. The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) describes your rights, such as pay in case of illness. It also states that you receive a fair and appropriate wage and that it is comparable to a permanent employee at the client. Issues such as vacation days, pension accrual and travel reimbursement are also regulated in the collective bargaining agreement.
- There is an active policy to prevent discrimination and the staff of the employment agency receive training, so they are good at their jobs and can therefore help you well.
In short, if an employment agency has the ABU seal of approval, you can be sure that you are dealing with a reliable employment agency.
