How can you tell if a staffing agency is reliable?

Are you looking for work? If so, you can find a job quickly and easily through a staffing agency. You can also use a staffing agency to see if a particular job or company is a good fit for you and potentially move on to a permanent position. There are many staffing agencies in the Netherlands. But how do you find an agency that not only meets your needs but is also honest and reliable? What should you look out for when you start working through a staffing agency?

The easiest way to tell if a staffing agency is honest and reliable is to check whether it is affiliated with a trade association. In the Netherlands, there are two trade associations: the NBBU and the ABU. If a staffing agency is a member of one of these two organizations, you can be sure it is reliable. This is because ABU and NBBU members must meet high quality standards. The most important quality standards of—in this case—the ABU are:

  • The staffing agency must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce. It seems logical, but unfortunately, there are agencies that aren't even registered.
  • The staffing agency is accredited by the SNA. The Foundation for Labor Standards (SNA) verifies that staffing agencies comply with all legal requirements. To obtain the SNA accreditation, a company must demonstrate that it maintains proper records. This includes ensuring that the correct documents, such as IDs and employment contracts, are properly recorded.
  • The collective bargaining agreement for temporary workers is being properly enforced. The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) outlines your rights, such as continued pay in the event of illness. It also stipulates that you are entitled to fair and appropriate pay that is comparable to that of a permanent employee at the client company. Matters such as vacation days, pension contributions, and travel expense reimbursement are also covered in the CBA.
  • We have an active policy to prevent discrimination, and the staff at the staffing agency receive training, which ensures they are skilled at their jobs and can therefore assist you effectively.

In short, if a staffing agency has the ABU quality mark, you can be sure you’re dealing with a reliable agency.
