The Function is a very independent role. So if you enjoy working on your own, without a boss constantly looking over your shoulder, then this job is for you.
Steel order picking: how does it work?
Just like in a regular warehouse, the products are stored in different locations. Each of these locations has a unique code that identifies the material and its location.
As an order picker, you print out a work order on the computer that specifies exactly what you need to pick and where it is located. You walk to that location and use the handheld scanner to pick the product, then you must move it to a spot where it can be loaded into the truck by the loading crew.
Moving the steel is, of course, too heavy to do by hand, which is why you use various types of overhead cranes. These allow you to secure the products, lift them, and move them. You do this remotely using a remote control. You then guide the steel to the correct location, where you scan it again to complete your order.
No experience with scanning or overhead cranes?
That’s no problem.
When you start, you’ll work day shifts for the first 2–4 weeks and receive comprehensive training in your duties. You’ll learn everything about working safely, the various products, how the scanner works, and how to safely operate the different overhead cranes.
Once you can do this independently, you’ll be able to work on your own and join the two-shift rotation.
